I’ve been contemplating investing in a waterproof puffer jacket for winter walks, especially considering the unpredictable weather we’ve been having lately. I’ve seen a few brands offering puffer jackets that claim to be fully waterproof, not just water-resistant.
I know the usual advice is to stick to layering. A merino base layer paired with fleece and then a Gore-Tex outer has generally been my go-to. But the idea of a single jacket that offers both insulation and waterproofing is tempting.
Effectiveness: Anyone here tried a waterproof puffer? Does it actually hold up in torrential rain?
Breathability: One concern I have is that a waterproof layer might compromise breathability. Any experiences to share?
Longevity: Given that these jackets aren’t cheap, how do they hold up over time?
Brand Recommendations: Any particular brands you think are worth looking into?
Personally I don’t see the appeal for multi-day hiking, as most people use their down jacket mostly just at camp in the evening, where you could take shelter if it started raining.
But I can see the appeal for winter day walks where you want better rain protection than the DWR coating on a regular puffer. But one question I would have is would you also take a waterproof shell if rain was forecast?
